In my never ending trawl of Youtube videos, I have come across this video which never cease to amaze me and to those who I have shared with.
Bobby McFerrin demonstrates the power of the pentatonic scale, using audience participation, at the event “Notes & Neurons: In Search of the Common Chorus”, from the 2009 World Science Festival, June 12, 2009.
SMU Chamber Choir (SMUCC) was privileged to be able to perform alongside the young artistes from P.U.S.H Music in their annual concert, Resonate 2010. We were invited to perform our own items as well as to sing as backing vocals in a few performances.
We had the opportunity to collaborate with many professionals as well as young, budding artistes. It was an inspiring revelation when we discovered the numerous admirable young talents in Singapore and to watch them being so exceptionally disciplined and determined at every rehearsal was a great motivation to us.
Also, we enjoyed the refreshing change from the normalcy of choir performances; we got to try Chinese Pop songs and learn interesting dance moves! Being exposed to different styles of working with professionals was also an enthralling experience to us. Forging friendships and conversing with all the amiable artistes was an unforgettable episode to all the choristers of SMUCC.
As guest performers, we had a short yet very fulfilling performance. We sang close-to-the-heart songs “Over the Rainbow” and “Bunga Sayang” that the audience could easily appreciate. Conducted by our beloved assistant resident conductor, Chong Wai Lun, we sang our hearts and lungs out till the very last chord to the rapturous applause and cheer from the audience. It made all the additional rehearsals during the holidays well worth it.
Overall, it was a good exposure for all of the performers. It was a fun break while passionately preparing for our annual concert that falls on the 27th January 2011 at Recital Studio Esplanade. Indubitably, it was an exciting, eye-opening experience to all of us in SMU Chamber Choir.
See you at our annual concert, Wrinkles in the Air IV!
